Meet the new Karlova backpack design - Tiflis backpack. It features 3 convenient zippered pockets and quite enough of space to carry it around all the time.
In the beginning it was planned as a bigger version of Puppy (it's another one of my backpack, a really tiny one, pattern here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1382365609/puppy-leather-backpack-pattern-leather). But then I did quite a few additions and modifications to it so I decided to give it a different name (planned name was Doggo).
Tiflis is an old name of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, where I moved last year, and this is my first project after a year of not being able to work. This way I am giving credit to this gorgeous country that gave me shelter and let me get back to what I love doing.
მიყვარს თბილისი!
Size approximately 12" x 16" x 8" - quite a large backpack for everyday use.
Materials:
For the front (and sides) panel, bottom and pockets (including back pocket) - 3-4 oz, medium-soft or medium hand. Back pocket can be made with just anything, even 2-2.5 oz, doesn’t matter.
The top stripes on the pockets can be made with same thickness, I used 5 oz but this is not necessary, better something relatively soft.
For the back panel, and the buckle holders I used 5-5.5 oz veg tan. For the back panel you can even use something more thick and firm.
For the straps, flap and the zipper frames - 8-9 oz. Keepers and the shackle holder were made with the same leather just skived it down to 5 oz.
Something for the drawstring - I used the round leather lace for sewing machines.
Used same 8-9 oz leather for the drawstring stopper but 5 oz is enough for that.
Hardware:
5 x 1” buckle
1 x 1” button studs
1 x shackle (mine is about half an inch - adjust the shackle strap width to your size)
2 x 14.5” zippers
1 x 9.7” zipper (take a 10” and cut shorter)
Rivets
Tools:
Scissors, knife (paper knife or rotary cutter would also work).
Stitching irons: my pattern is made for 5.2mm stitching irons (5 stitches per inch). If you have 5 mm irons print the pattern at 96.7%)
Needles - according to your thread size, a pair of harness needles. My thread is 0.6 mm.
1” bag punch (oblong). Hole punches. Rivet setter.
Mallet.
Pattern is designed for hand stitching.
Formats: A4 and USLetter. If you need A1 I can make it by request (and add it later).
The pattern has stitching holes marked for 5 SPI stitching irons (5 stitches per inch, or approximately 5.2 mm). 5 mm stitching irons made by metric system sometimes fit, sometimes they don’t (depending on manufacturer). If you have 5 mm irons and the spacing seems a tad too large for them you can print the pattern at 96.2% scale. I advise to print one page and try your irons to see how they fit before printing the entire pattern.
